iar: magazine E

E = Elephant [Issue 2 Spring 2010 £14.99 pp 204+cover]

£14.99 - you read right, no typos here - the price of a hard-back novel.

Most surprising thing: that no one has done "Sexrays" before!

Most surprising thing 2: one wouldn't imagine any xray photo could be erotic - this type of kissing is one of the less saucy ones! ;-)

Marc Valli

Why did it take so long to read?: It's a mighty tome. I stuck it on the shelf. I dipped into it occasionally. It was too heavy to take in the bath :)

Favourite bits: a section of articles about artists who draw - I'd love to be able to draw, and am intrigued by people who can, and how and where they do it.

Lapin

Favourite bit 2: Shinro Ohtake has been making scrapbooks for 20+ years from collaging found stuff and pictures, and painting and drawing in old books. I LOVE this stuff!! :-D

The alternatives: Tate Modern conveniently arrange their magazines in alphabetical order. The alternatives were Exit (£10 and full of really dull photography), Exit (a different one - Euro20 - architecture), Esse (£9 - art), Eye (£? - graphic design), and 8 (£20 - photography; and I wasn't sure if that was technically an 'E' :) ). I chose Elephant, in spite of the price, because I thought there might actually be something in it I'd be interested in reading - it's been slim pickings so far!

Would I buy again: maybe... if it was on the £1 stall!

I was served by a very friendly (they all have been so far) man in his early 40's with a 'central European' accent. He asked me if I wanted a normal carrier for 5p or one of their fancy strong ones for £1. I declined both. I paid with a credit card, and also bought a bag, which I carried my uber-priced magazine home in.

[in case you were wondering... the picture above is an old oil tank behind Tate Modern that is going to become Tate Modern 2].
