railroad tracks V
Peter is a train conductor. He loves the Isle of Wight. He says that when it is sunny everyone is friendly and chatty. When it's raining everyone is miserable and sullen.

rocks
Today I climbed my first rock: small chimney (that groove in the middle, which is near another climb called 'Take That Effing Chalk Bag Off, Or I'll Nick Your Rope And Give It To Terry "The Chainsaw" Tullis And He'll Keep It For Ever And Ever' - honestly!) :)
My neighbours spent the day rinsing their entire 10-foot gravel path through a 10-inch sieve. That is also true.

the lidl moment
The queues in Lidl were legion. One would stand for hours, watching as the people in front slowly dribbled through buying inexpensive strangely named foodstuffs and groceries.
Initially this was infuriating - why don't they have more people on the tills, can't they go any quicker, why does it take so long to scan three items, why is that person doing their entire weeks shop and taking as long to pack it away... but after a time I realised that it was futile and detrimental to get frustrated by this. Why did it matter how long it took? One just had to accept that it would take as long as it did. So now going into Lidl - I chill, I stand, I contemplate the world and experience life in the moment; as minutes of peace free from the usual distractions and pressures. For that moment - the Lidl moment - I am at peace. This has extended into other areas of my life too. So if I am frustrated by something I just think 'Lidl' and life moves into perspective, my frustration subsides, and I feel at peace with myself and the world.

feminine hygiene VIII
I found a mooncup! Not in some worthy healthfood co-operative or metropolitan department store - but in a small chain chemist in a small town. I'd heard of such things (see 'feminine hygiene II') but was never convinced they really existed. It was sat looking rather lonely on the shelf - the smaller size of the family. And at £22 it's definitely an investment piece! :)

puzzle
This is an old puzzle. I was given it in a maths lesson when I was 12. The teacher had a comb-over and died of a heart attack at 64. I would try and do the puzzle on paper, but could never get the answer right. Then computers came along ;-) It still intrigues me.
A man did a favour for a king. The king asked the man to choose his reward. The man asked for a grain of rice to be placed on the first square of a chessboard. He asked for this to be doubled on the second and all subsequent squares. How many grains of rice did he end up with?

hotel milk
hotels and B&Bs must have 4 cartons of UHT milk on each room's hospitality tray. it's a rule. this is regardless of the number of people staying in the room, the size of the cups, the number of teabags and coffee sachets, or even the price/poshness/star rating of the hotel.
no more and no less.
i have only seen this regulation breached twice: the occasion of less milk appeared to be a rushed-room change, the occasion of more milk just seemed like a flagrant disregard :)
